Diane Slobotkin in the News
New York Times - Helen Harrison writes
Ms. Slobotkin's sensuous stone carvings are abstract studies that exploit the innate properties of her materials without falling too deeply under their spell. Stones like onyx and alabaster can be so richly patterned that the sculptor wants only to bring out intrinsic forms rather than to give free reign to his or her imagination, but Ms. Slobotkin successfully avoids that pitfall.
There is a nice give and take between the stone's character and the artist's vision, so that some natural shapes are emphasized and others are deliberately ignored or suppressed. In any case, none of the forms seem either arbitrary or contrived.
